Grace Taylor Program Manager. Denizhan Yigitbas Product Manager. Last year, we announced the first phase of a new extensibility model for Visual Studio.

This new model will make extensions easier to write and more reliable along with additional benefits such as being able to install these extensions without restarting the IDE.

Today we released Visual Studio for Mac v This release includes User Secrets support, several new code fixes, Apple Developer Accounts, adds Task Window and Regular Expressions dialog implemented in native UI, and fixes for top reported user issues.

We’re also releasing our first preview of Visual Studio for Mac We are happy to announce that Visual Studio At Microsoft, we thrive on getting feedback and experiences from those using Visual Studio and continually work to improve the product based on this feedback.

Visual Studio When you have multiple instances of Visual Studio open at the same time, it can be tricky to tell them apart. But that tweet also reminded me of the last several months. For 3 months, I read every comment in Developer Community tickets from the last four years that I could find related to Visual Studio setup and the installer.

In the end, the results were a combination of customizing Visual Studio and improving productivity. Your tickets gave ideas for minimizing distractions and putting your coding workflow together in one spot, like a dashboard. You were brutally honest, and it was incredible. VS Workflow dashboard early mock-up. The dashboard aggregates everything you care about into an immediately glanceable and actionable canvas.

You get what you need with fewer clicks so that you can be more productive. Vote here. Here are a couple of examples:. Feel free to let me know what would make this experience awesome for you in this survey. Thank you for writing tickets, and please keep sharing your thoughts with us.

Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support. This is not the latest version of Team Foundation Server. To download the latest release, please visit the current release notes for Team Foundation Server Update 3. You can change the language of this page by clicking the globe icon in the page footer and selecting your desired language. In this article, you will find information regarding Team Foundation Server Click the button to download.

Please see the TFS Install page for more information. This update fixes potential cross site scripting XSS and other security vulnerabilities. See the blog post for more information. It is a full upgrade, so you can upgrade directly to TFS Code Search provides fast, flexible, and accurate search across all your code.

As your codebase expands and is divided across multiple projects and repositories, finding what you need becomes increasingly difficult.

To maximize cross-team collaboration and code sharing, Code Search quickly and efficiently locates relevant information across all your projects. From discovering examples of an API’s implementation, browsing its definition, to searching for error text, Code Search delivers a one-stop solution for all your code exploration and troubleshooting needs Figure 1.

For details, see Search across all your code. Packages enable you to share code across your organization: you can compose a large product, develop multiple products based on a common shared framework, or create and share reusable components and libraries. Package Management Figure 2 facilitates code sharing by hosting your packages, sharing them with the people you select, and making them easily accessible to Team Build and Release Management.

Package Management eliminates the need to host a separate NuGet server or file share by hosting NuGet packages directly in your Team Foundation Server. It has best-in-class support for NuGet 3. It works seamlessly with your existing TFS infrastructure, teams, and permissions, so there is no need to deal with synchronizing identities, managing groups in multiple places, etc. It also integrates easily with Team Build so you can create and use packages in continuous integration workflows.

For more details, see the Package Management overview. In Team Foundation Server , we have added new features and functionality to work items and Kanban boards.

The new work item Figure 3 form has a new look and feel. It also adds some great new features:. The new work item form is the default for new collections only. If you’re migrating an existing collection you will have to enable the new work item form from the admin settings. For more information, see Manage roll out of the new web form.

You can now setup an alert for tracking changes to a single work item just by clicking on the new “Follow” button Figure 4 in the form. When you follow a work item, you will be notified any time the work item changes — including field updates, links, attachments, and comments.

For details, see Follow a work item. Have you been hitting F5 to figure out what is going on throughout the day with your Kanban board? Try the icon in the screenshot below Figure 5.

When anyone in your team creates, updates, or deletes a work item on the board, you will receive live updates on your board immediately. Also, if the administrator makes board or team level updates such as adding a new column or enabling bugs on backlog, you are notified to refresh the board to update your board layout.

All you need to do is enable the tower icon on your Kanban board and start collaborating with your team. For more information, see Kanban basics. Checklists titles now appear as hyperlinks Figure 6. You can click on the title to open the work item form. Checklists now also support context menus that allow you to open, edit, or delete checklist items Figure 7.

For details, see Add task checklists. You now have the ability to drill down on your Epic and Feature boards Figure 8. The checklist format lets you easily mark work as completed, and provides a handy bird’s eye view of the completed versus outstanding work.

For more information, see Kanban features and epics. We are giving you more control of the additional information that shows on the cards on your boards. You can now select annotations that you want to view on your Kanban cards Figure 9. Simply unselect an annotation and it disappears from the cards on your Kanban board. The first two annotations to show up here are child work items tasks in this example and the Test annotation. For more information, see Customize Cards. We have added a new command to all rich text controls on work items that lets you clear all formatting from selected text.

If you’re like most users, you’ve probably been burned in the past by copying and pasting formatted text into this field that you cannot undo or clear. Personalize your Kanban boards by setting filters on users, iterations, work item types, and tags Figure These filters persist so that you can view your personalized board, even when you connect from multiple devices. Team members can also filter their boards to view progress accruing to a specific parent work item. For example, a user can view user stories that are linked to a feature, or view work across two or more features that roll up to an epic.

This feature, much like Checklists, is one more step in our effort to bring visibility through to the different backlog levels. For details, see Filter Kanban board.

When you create a new work item from the Queries tab or from the New Work Item dashboard widget, the iteration path of that work item is always set to the current iteration. This is not what all teams want, because it means that bugs could show up on the task board immediately. With this improvement, teams can choose the default iteration path a specific one or the current iteration that should be used for new work items.

Navigate to the administration area for your team to choose a default iteration. For more information, see the Customize area and iteration paths page. You can now add a checkbox control to your work items Figure This new field type Boolean has all the properties of normal fields and can be added to any type in your process.

For details, see Customize a field. You can now add and remove tags from multiple work items using the bulk edit dialog Figure For details, see Add tags to work items. We have exposed a new extension point on the backlog.

Extensions can target the pane on the right side, where mapping and work details are today Figure We have significantly improved the formatting and usability of work item alerts, follows, and mention emails sent by TFS Figure Emails now include a consistent header, a clear call to action, and improved formatting to make sure the information in the mail is easier to consume and understand.

Additionally, all these emails are being designed to ensure they render well on mobile devices. For more information, see Work item alerts. We added the ability to create rich work item templates directly into the native web experience Figure This capability was previously very limited in the web, and only available in this new form through a Visual Studio power tool. Teams can now create and manage a set of templates for quickly modifying common fields. For details, see Work item templates.

Team Foundation Server and later versions no longer support Project Server integration. We have detected that you have Project Server integration configured for this database. Team Foundation Server has made improvements on multiple widgets, such as the Query Tile and Pull Request widgets.

We have redesigned our widget catalog to accommodate the growing set of widgets and deliver a better overall experience Figure The new design includes an improved search experience and has been restyled to match the design of our widget configuration panels.

For more details, see Widget Catalog. The Query Tile widget now supports up to 10 conditional rules and has selectable colors Figure The Pull Request widget now supports multiple sizes, allowing users to control the height of the widget.

We’re working on making most of the widgets we ship resizable, so look for more here. The New Work Item widget now allows you to select the default work item type, instead of forcing you to select the most common type you’re creating over and over from the drop-down list. We have made the WIT chart widgets resizable. This allows users to see an expanded view of any WIT chart on the dashboard regardless of its original size.

We have updated the Team Members widget to make it easier to add somebody to your team Figure Teams can now configure the size of the dashboard’s Query Results widget, allowing it to display more results.

The Sprint Overview widget has been redesigned making it easier for teams to see if they are on track. The Assigned to Me widget helps users manage the work assigned to them without leaving the dashboard context Figure By providing a widget dedicated to this purpose, team admins can add this functionality to their dashboards with 16 fewer clicks, no context switches and no typing required.

Users can now view, sort, filter, and manage the work assigned to them within the widget context. The APIs also let you add, remove, update, replace, and get information on a widget or a list of widgets on a dashboard.

The documentation is available on Visual Studio online docs. Non-admin users can now create and manage team dashboards. Team admins can restrict non-admin permissions through the dashboard manager.

The new Git experience from Visual Studio will also be coming to Visual Studio for Mac, beginning with the introduction of the Git Changes tool window.

As always, you can head on over to the new Developer Community to browse through existing feature requests to upvote and comment or create your own. Stay tuned for announcements about the bit Visual Studio Preview 1 availability, which will include our UI refinements and accessibility improvements.

And remember! Like any work in progress, these features are still in development, so some of them will be coming to Visual Studio after the first public release. Comments are closed. Suggestion for Cascadia Code parenthesis : I think they could get a little adjustment to look more like Consolas. Other tools that work with TFVC, such as the Power Tools and Shell Extension have been unsupported for VS, with the claim being made that the functionality of the power tools were moved into the command line which is not the case for a number of them.

We continue to support our devs and scenarios using Azure DevOps. It already has and will continue to have great Git integration in VS. You can also take a look at the Azure DevOps roadmap. Happens randomly, but once it has happened it stays stuck that way.

We used to have to restart VS to fix but now just flick back to the home panel of source control and click the little refresh button. That seems to refresh the auth token and allows check-in to proceed again.

If you experience any regressions, please report them on Developer Community. Pratik Nadagouda, the issue that Ian Yates refers to is already open in the Developer Community, and has been for years. These responses are being largely ignored. TFSVC is painfully slow these days. To be honest, you ripped out all the built-in integration with DevOps. Look at the dialog you get when creating a new Git repository from VS.

I just wish you would come clean and say what your plans are. About 18 months back we had a Microsoft evangelist visit the company I was working for and he explicitly said that GitHub was going to be the future, and that our large enterprise should plan to move to GitHub. GitHub is essentially just Repos and a bit of Pipelines. The fact that Microsoft is having to remove existing, already developed integrations in order to try to push people away from DevOps to GitHub is telling.

I have a suspicion that GitHub is better although not by much. Another GitLab disappointment is their Nuget repository. So make sure you identify the areas you care about, and then evaluate those thoroughly. I think you will be surprised. My old team members certainly misses TFS, and we were still on an older version.

WIth TFS you could tell that much thought was put into each feature before it was released. TFS may the newest but not the last. If that does not happen, customers will not use Visual Studio It is as simple as that.

They want everything in their cloud…. Keep us feeding their money making cow…. Cloud is a trap…. Totally agree. So many of their moves over the last few years to me feel like a shift away from enterprise customers to small outfits. Then rebrand everything so it seems new. Xamarin becomes MAUI. TFS becomes DevOps. But again, nothing works better just named different. I hope that is not the plan. Many businesses will not accept dropping TFS integration. Who wants their proprietary source code away from the business owned computer systems?

We moved to git from TFS a year ago but we had not invested much effort in TFS for years — just using it for source code control. Surprisingly we were able to migrate the history as well. We moved to a private cloud instance of git though could equally have moved to on premises. Please let us know through Developer Community if you see any regressions for the integration as we release preview versions of VS , so that we can catch and address any issues quickly.

This is deeply concerning. As a team lead, I literally just fought to have my whole company convert over to Azure DevOps. It was expensive and painful but I counted it a success. It feels like Microsoft has little concern of the impact these decisions have on our companies, lives and careers.

For Windows development? I believe that rust support is very promising. Just look at this to see what I mean. It requires minimal cognitive load to handle and does not force strings to be immutable which is bad for performance. Thanks for listening to the community and keep making all the investments in new tech for all of us.

Greatly appreciated! Hopefully updating of VS extensions works without restarting the VS extensions must be out of proc. Also the new icons look even more worse. Best clarity, legibility, and contrast had the VS icons, they were perfect.

Just look at the green tick and the red cross. Why are the tick and the cross smaller and harder to make out? Who decided to waste a bunch of time on that? I, for one, am thrilled they finally flipped the floppy disk save icon upside down- that was super-important in my work. I actually think the icons are a bit dated and prefer those in , but we can definitely agree that the new icons are hideous!

Can I hope for updates to the custom debugging visualizer development story? And also best check-in experience. The experience that started with is still simply horrible and time wasting and very clumsy. They are not really listening… I still have an installation only for TFS operations for example, when there are no changes it shows a popup saying that, but in it still opens the files side by side and force you to deduct they are identical, and more and more, very stubborn VS architects!

Yes, ligatures are supported. I had heard that before. But maybe VS will move to. This is good to hear. Think back to the compact menus, lower case menus and Start Window craziness. Any major changes to the UI needs to have options to allow folks to make it look similar to the way it did before.

This solves the problem I have today where every class I have to share a new link to LS for my students. Just please make it stable. LS has been anything but stable over the years. Sometimes students cannot see updates, other times I cannot debug, yet other times I cannot edit. Stability needs to be paramount. But that means none of the existing extensions we have will work anymore which means a likely long wait for extension authors to update if they ever do.

Switching to x64 means my VS instances of which I can run several can easily grow out of control but if that means more stability because of less out-of-proc work then great. Thanks for your feedback Michael! To respond to your extensibility question, we are aware that all extension authors will need to migrate their extensions to bit in order for you to successfully use them in that version. LeslieRichardson Will you guys be providing an update on the Extension API redesign you solicited feedback for last year?

Really hoping to see Visualizers become first-class Extension features. Your visualizer ask is noted however! MAUI is just the new incarnation of Xamarin. I am shocked and thrilled to hear you guys are finally making a bit VS! After a decade, literally thousands of developer requests which have been closed over and over again and all the bogus technical explanations for why bit was impossible and undesirable, I had just about given up hope of this ever happening.

However, I have a curious question, which IDE is used by the developers those who are writing code to develop Visual Studio? Visual Studio is written in Visual Studio. Most internal developers use the latest CI build of Visual Studio. Amanda, This is great news. Please make sure that 3rd parties get the chance to get their VS extensions ready for this new release by starting a 3rd party test program. It would be a shame if the release of VS would get negative feedback because of missing or failing extensions.

And yes, my company also creates an extension to VS. Would be nice to know if is future proofed for ARM Hopefully you are planning to migrate to. NET 6 or whatever version we end up on in the future. It seems kind of silly that VS is still stuck on the ancient. NET Framework instead of benefitting from all the performance improvements in.

NET 5 onwards. That is a shame. Is work ongoing to migrate to the latest dotnet? NET Framework technology, it must run on. NET Framework. If they switch to MAUI in the future, they would also be able to switch to. NET probably 7 or 8 by then. Thank you for finally doing this Microsoft! Performance, hot reload, etc.

It is surreal to read that after so many years Visual Studio will be finally running as a bit app. I am curious to know as new Visual Studio will depend on which version. Hopefully this performs decently. Conditional breakpoints tank perform so horrendously that I never use them. It would be nice. Almost 2 years now since it exited extended support. Mads, are there some features required by Visual Studio in.

NET Framework that are not in. NET 6? And what about Visual Studio for Mac, would it run on. This is where we want you to engage with us on specifics of a feature and give feedback on designs. Could you please add your vote to the relevant tickets or create new ones to help us prioritize this work?

I cannot explain how excited I am for 64bit VS finally! I have mixed feelings about this. Everything sounds good, however I feel it could be as buggy as VS or worst. Delivering a solid code editing experience would be enough for me. I just have one question. Will new projects still target bit by default, or bit by default? The default bitness of each project varies across the supported projects, runtimes, and languages supported by VS. Afaik, there are no plans to change the project defaults as part of VS moving to bit.

Your operating system updates and your visual studio updates continue to interrupt my development process. You continue to introduce regression bugs that negatively impact my development productivity. I dread any changes you guys make.
